In 2004, Australian Nurse Bev Cooney visited Satipo with a group of doctors from Newcastle and Lima. During this time she saw an urgent need for rehabilitation care. Due to widespread poverty and an extreme lack of resources, many disabled and mentally handicapped children have no access to treatment of any kind.
In 2005 Bev returned to Satipo to begin making plans to set up a rehabilitation centre. She founded a registered non-governmental organisation Operation Los NiƱos to help the town of Satipo. Due for completion in May, 2007, the rehabilitation centre has been funded using Bev's life savings and superannuation.
The rehabilitation centre is in desperate need of resources including beds, linen, chairs, desks, books, stationary, exercise mats and a kitchen.
Please consider helping the disadvantaged children of Satipo by donating to MissionLosNinos.org or attending upcoming fundraising events.
